Sodium thiosulfate is an inorganic sodium salt composed of sodium and thiosulfate ions in a 2:1 ratio. It has a role as an antidote to cyanide poisoning, a nephroprotective agent and an antifungal drug. It contains a thiosulfate(2-).

Mainly used as a fixing agent in photography.It is also used as a reducing agent for dichromates in tanning, a neutralizing agent for nitrogen-containing tail gas, a mordant, a bleaching agent for straw and wool, and a dechlorinating agent in pulp bleaching.It is also used in the manufacture of tetraethyl lead, dye intermediates, etc., and for silver extraction from ores.

When heated, it decomposes and produces toxic fumes containing sulfur oxides.It reacts violently with strong oxidizing agents.
